Press release -
Fourteen London Northwestern Railway stations to receive Pay As You Go upgrade
Fourteen stations operated by London Northwestern Railway (LNR) are to receive upgraded Pay As You Go technology as part of a major £20 million government investment.
The stations, including Berkhamsted, Bletchley and Hemel Hempstead, are among 53 across the south-east of England to benefit from simpler and more flexible payment options thanks to the rollout of tap-in tap-out ticketing by the end of the year.
Passengers using the technology will be able to use their bank card or smart device to tap-in on station readers in the knowledge they will automatically be guaranteed the best price available on the day of travelling.
Jonny Wiseman, LNR customer experience director, said; "This welcome investment means even more of our passengers travelling in the south east of England will have access to smart Pay As You Technology.
"Passengers travelling through the fourteen stations receiving the technology may notice readers being installed or gatelines upgraded over the coming months ahead of the system coming into operation."
The LNR stations receiving the technology are: Apsley; Berkhamsted; Bletchley; Bricket Wood; Cheddington; Garston; Hemel Hempstead; How Wood; Kings Langley; Leighton Buzzard; Park Street; St Albans Abbey; Tring and Watford North.
Rail Minister Huw Merriman said:
"One of the best ways to get more people using our railways is to make journeys as simple, flexible and convenient as possible and the government’s programme for rail reform prioritises exactly that.
"By removing the stress of finding the best deal in advance or having the right ticket ready to go at the barriers, the extension of tap-in tap-out ticketing is the next step of our plan for rail reform and we’re working towards Pay As You Go being rolled out beyond the South East through the Midlands and up to the North."
More information about the Pay As You Go system will be made available ahead of its launch. The introduction of the technology will not impact alternative methods of purchasing tickets in advance of travel or the availability of traditional season tickets.
