RoSPA Gold Award for West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway
A Gold Award for health and safety practices has been presented to West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway.
The train operators have been recognised for an ongoing commitment to ensuring that staff, customers and contractors get home safely at the end of every day.
The internationally-renowned RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Health and Safety Awards, recognise achievements in health and safety management systems across 24 different business sectors.
After receiving a Silver Award for the past two years, the Gold Award achievement is significant for the train operators. Over the past 12 months, improvements have been made to create more effective day to day processes, which have had a positive impact on the safety of staff.
Janet Ault, safety and environment director for West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway, said: “This award demonstrates the commitment, professionalism and enthusiasm of our staff, to make sure that we keep everyone who comes into contact with our company, as safe as possible at all times.
“There are always improvements that can be made and we are committed to not only maintaining the high standards we have set this year, but also building on this strong base in the future. A big part of this has been about creating a safety culture across the company, where staff work closely together to promote best practice, and to bring that to their work everyday.”
The RoSPA Awards scheme receives entries from organisations around the world, and promotes best practice in leadership and workforce involvement. Awards are presented to the best entries across 24 industry sectors including construction, healthcare, transport and logistics, engineering, manufacturing and education.

The West Midlands Trains franchise started on 10 December 2017 and will run until 2025/26.
West Midlands Trains operates 1,300 services a day, manages 150 stations and provides over 70 million passenger journeys a year. Over the course of the franchise, West Midlands Trains will be investing £1 billion into the rail network to deliver new trains, improved routes and station upgrades. This will include 400 new train carriages across the network and space for an extra 85,000 passengers into Birmingham and London at peak times.
The franchise is a joint venture between Abellio (70.1% share) and East Japan Railway Company / Mitsui & Co., Ltd (29.9% share in a 50:50 split). Abellio is the international passenger transport subsidiary of the Dutch national railway company, Nederlandse Spoorwegen. In the UK, Abelllio operates ScotRail and Greater Anglia train services, Merseyrail services in a joint venture with Serco and buses through Abellio London. For more information visit www.abellio.com
