Press release -
Storm Goretti: West Midlands Railway issues ‘do not travel’ warning to passengers
West Midlands Railway (WMR) passengers are urged not to travel on the railway today (Friday 9 January) following significant disruption caused by Storm Goretti.
WMR services are suspended until further notice due to significant damage to railway infrastructure across the West Midlands, with major disruption to services overnight which will continue until further notice.
Ticket easements are in place, allowing customers with an existing ticket to travel on any available service up to and including Monday 12 January.
Jonny Wiseman, WMR customer experience director, said: “Customers are urged not to attempt travel today while our services are suspended. We are working closely with Network Rail to resume services as soon as possible, once it is safe to do so.
“We will provide regular updates via our website and social channels to advise customers when we are able to resume services. Passengers are advised to check journey planners before travelling.
“I’d like to thank frontline staff for their hard work and dedication, and our passengers for their understanding.”
The damage to infrastructure includes signals, overhead lines, and track-side equipment, preventing normal operations.
Road conditions caused by the storm prevent engineering teams from reaching affected sites to assess damage and carry out essential repairs.
